Digital Media and the Human Condition
China is currently treating people with a condition known as ‘digital addiction”. Seriously!?! There is a digital overload that is being considered the next step in evolution. In China they are considering the addiction to digital media to be a severe issue like that of drugs, or alcohol. So let me ask you some questions…..How long have you been on the Internet today? Did you wake up to an alarm clock or the buzz of your cell phone? What is the first thing you do when you wake up; brush your teeth, or check your Facebook? Are these questions scary or are you evolving??
I am only 30 years old but when I was in High School cell phones and computers were something only people with money had access to. I remember using a pay phone to call my boyfriend returning his page me about our date, and I don’t mean his “facebook page”. It’s weird to think that he wasn’t just able to send me a text msg, or email and that I wouldn’t receive it immediately. We are a culture of now, and if you’re in marketing getting your message out is going to be much trickier than it was in the time of pay phones, and pagers , just a mere 10 years ago. Our minds have become demanding, we are an impatient species with attention spans only long enough for what interests us. So in advertising we need to have a game plan for now!
The Bottom Line – keep it short, keep it simple– and keep it interesting. Have the conversation, and never forget that your fighting in a sea of MASS Communication, tailor your message to the interest of the consumer not just your business or client
